FBI Citizens Academy Guidelines For Nomination

The FBI Citizens Academy aims to foster a greater understanding of the FBI’s role in the community and to open lines of communication with the people it serves. Participants hear presentations on federal investigation procedures; counter-terrorism; undercover operations; white-collar, violent, and cyber crimes; public corruption; civil rights; firearms safety; and SWAT.

We are accepting nominations for the FBI Omaha Citizens Academy. No dates have been set for this academy class. Classes will be held once a week for eight weeks. Exact dates will be announced. Nominations may be submitted by present or former FBI employees, Citizens Academy graduates, FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association members, or self nomination.

Candidates MUST meet the following requirements

  • A recognized business, religious, or community leader.
  • Live/work within the Division’s jurisdiction.
  • Minimum age is 21 years of age.
  • No prior felony convictions.
  • No misdemeanor arrests within one year of application.
  • Must consent to a criminal records check.
  • Must sign a Waiver Statement with regard to criminal records check.
  • Agree to attend all sessions with no more than two excused absences.

To nominate a candidate, please fill out our digital nomination form with the links above or complete the attached “Nomination Form PDF” and provide a narrative stating the reasons why you are nominating the candidate. After being selected, the candidates will be mailed an application form before the next Citizens Academy is scheduled to begin. If you plan to nominate more than one person, a separate form must be completed for each. The deadline for receiving nominations is December 31. Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year and will be held for the next selection process.

Selection of the final candidates for the next academy class is based on factors such as their level and nature of participation in community groups and organizations outside of work, and their interest in learning more about the FBI. Although a resume or bio is not required, it is helpful to give the selection committee a closer look at the nominee.

After graduation the attendees are expected to help improve relationships between law enforcement agencies and the community by sharing the insights and information they gain through the Citizens Academy and staying involved in the FBI Community Outreach Programs by becoming a member of the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBILVCAAA) after graduation. Academy graduates, while not in any way an official spokesperson for the FBI, may be called upon to share their understanding of the role of federal law enforcement.
